Cuban pop sensation, Willy Chirino wears Marrero Collection

As most of you know…

1. I live in South Florida
2. The Cuban population in Miami is massive

There is a plethora of cuban artists who have thrived in the sunshine state, or, for that matter, the world: Celia Cruz, Andy Garcia, Pitbull, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Lissette Alvarez… but a list of talento like this would not be complete without the creator of the Sound of Miami and Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Willy Chirino
Cuban pop sensation Chirino has recorded over 30 albums, several of which have attained platinum and gold status, Grammy awards, and is celebrating forty years as an artist.

Chirino is also married to my favorite Spanish singer, Lissette Alvarez, who is best known for recording a Spanish language-version of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in 1985.
Lissette has had a successful recording career with more than 30 albums to her name, including 8 gold albums and 2 platinum albums.
She has received countless awards during her singing career, including a UNICEF award for her humanitarian work with children. In Latin America, she is known as: “La reina de la cancion romantica”, I LOVE her voice!

Back when I was a little kid I used to love lip-synching her songs. During my teenage years, mom and I would go to her concerts in Puerto Rico, and when I moved to Florida (by a stroke of luck) I met her and became friends with the sultry singer-songwriter.
And last year I was fortunate enough to see her in concert with the equally fierce Yolandita Monge in Puerto Rico and gave them some Marrero Collection scarves when I met them backstage.
They loved them!

Little did I know that Willy – the architect of the Miami Sound – was going to be wearing one of my scarves at his latest concert last week in Houston, Texas. Not only did he send a pic but Lissette recorded a cute testimonial of him saying how much he loved wearing the scarf. How cool is that?

As an artist who creates images from the heart these are the days that you say THAT IS SO AWESOME!
A real honor for this humble Puerto Rican illustrator.
