Amaluna

My night at the circus… Amaluna’s Cirque du Soleil

Cerceau_Water Bowl_1551_RWhat a way to close 2014!

I scored tickets to Cirque du Soleil ‘s latest show, Amaluna. My girlfriend, Margarita, and I simply love a good show, and when you combine a concert (think cutting-edge mix of rock and techno), a stunning fashion show, a spectacular light show, and acrobatic flash, you experience a show that you’ll never forget.

Clowns CWP_141Amaluna, or “Mother Moon,” now playing until Jan. 25, 2015 under a tent at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, is the opposite of most Cirque productions because it’s cast is 70 percent female. Written and directed by Tony Award-winning director, Diane Paulus, Amaluna is a celebration of love and a tribute to the work and voice of women.

The Show invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance and that marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.
In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men washes ashore the island, triggering an epic and emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test, and the couple must face numerous demanding trials before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.
Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; it is a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds

My favorite act was the Balance Goddess (Lili Chao-Rigolo), who methodically builds a mobile sculpture in tense silence save for some of her exhalations, might be the one you talk about afterwards. Chao-Rigolo makes a sculpture out of 13 palm leaf ribs, using one of her legs and one of her arms. Her mesmerizing act is one of Cirque’s most unusual offerings yet.

I strongly recommend that you don’t miss the opportunity to start 2015 with a touch of magic and wonder.

Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was but a dream. It was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and the of the world. The family has since grown and now includes thousands of dreamers – creators, artists, technicians and workers who toil in the shadows. The dream has become a symbol of Quebec pride, an international entertainment company that has brought 35 large-scale shows to life – 20 of which are still in operation. The company, which celebrated it’s 30th anniversary in June 2014, has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents.Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees worldwide, including 1,300 performers from more than 50 different countries.
